Which is right for you, granite or quartz?

Granite Countertops

There is nothing more elegant and inspiring for a kitchen than natural stone countertops. Each piece of stone is uniquely created by God, which gives every kitchen a different personality.

There are some factors you should consider when choosing Granite for your countertop surfaces. Granite is a natural stone product, and is not manufactured in a factory. Stone is mined, fabricated and installed in kitchens, but these three steps do not change the stone and it's natural imperfections.

The beautiful patterns and colors we all love, have been formed over thousands of years by the heating and cooling of the earth combined with pressure changes within rock formations. Each piece of stone has markings which appear to be imperfections, but in actuality are part of the stone formation process. The common two variances that people find in granite are fissures and formations.

Granite is an extremely durable, and easy to maintain countertop surface. Silex offers natural granite at extremely affordable prices.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are an engineered stone product, which are made by mixing and compressing natural quartz derived from granite and epoxy resins to create a hard wearing and stain-impervious surface. Quartz countertops are molded and milled to standard sizes and thickness but can easily be manufactured to custom specifications and are available in a wide variety of colors.

Quartz can be affordable, but does not cost less than granite. It must still be fabricated and installed using the same methods as granite countertops. It lacks the unique qualities of a natural stone and typically has a more conservative print pattern. Quartz is a functional and durable top which is best used in commercial applications or very high traffic areas. If you desire countertops with a conservative look and the highest durability, then Quartz is the natural fit for your application.

How does one select the right countertop color?

There are many factors to consider when selecting your the color and style of your countertop surface. The design must tie in flooring, cabinets, backsplash as well as all sources of light.

We suggest starting with your countertop selection and carry a sample of your stone to help select your cabinets, flooring and backsplash. If you have already made other selections such as cabinets or backsplash, we recommend bringing a cabinet door and backsplash tile to help aid in selecting the right countertop. At Silex Interiors we offer kitchen cabinets and tile backsplash which certainly eases the purchasing process.

As a rule of thumb, you should decide whether you prefer light or dark stones and exotic or conservative patterns. These two decisions will help to narrow down the selection process and bring clarity to your choice.

Always remember to bring a drawing of your layout, so that an estimator can determine the quantity of stone you need to complete your project.
